Recent Reads #31

Last year, I renamed ‘Weekly’ Wrap-Ups to Recent Reads, as I feel like that reflects the timescale between posts more accurately!

As ever, today I will be briefly reviewing all the books I’ve read since my last post in approximately fifty words, which does mean that two books I read in January will be included here. This post also explains my concept of ‘The Chosen Ones’ to highlight my favourite books in each post!

1. Bookshop Girl in Paris by Chloe Coles

I loved being back with Paige in this funny, romantic and obviously bookish trip to Paris. These books are like rays of sunshine on my shelf that never fail to pick me up when I need them. Paige is such a memorable, relatable character that I always love spending time with and can’t wait to see what she does next. Four stars.

2. Rules for Being a Girl by Candace Bushell and Katie Cotugo 🧠

I really enjoyed this feminist rallying cry of a book. It’s akin to Moxie, with elements of #MeToo and victim-blaming. Full review here. Four stars.

3. All Your Twisted Secrets by Diana Urban ⭐️🧠

This is the mystery you need to pick up in 2020. Utterly compelling, twisty and surprising – I loved it! Full review here. Four and a half stars. Also, thank you so much to Harper 360 for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

4. The Sisters Grimm by Menna Van Praag  🏳️‍🌈 🧠

I really liked this compelling, intricate fantasy that puts an original spin on tales that you think you know. I felt like Praag captured that dark edge that the original Grimm tales had, yet added her own unique flavour to them that drew me in. Full review here. Three and a half stars.

5. We Set the Dark on Fire by Tehlor Kay Mejia ⭐️ 🏳️‍🌈 🧠

I loved this book so much! It explores patriarchal society and sexist expectations so well, particularly how women are expected to be almost everything and nothing at the same time, consigned to the sidelines. I’ve fallen in love with both Carmen and Dani and now I really need to know how their story continues, especially after that ending. Four and a half stars.
