Recent Reads #36

Last year, I renamed ‘Weekly’ Wrap-Ups to Recent Reads, as I feel like that reflects the timescale between posts more accurately!

As ever, today I will be briefly reviewing all the books I’ve read since my last post in approximately fifty words. This post also explains my concept of ‘The Chosen Ones’ to highlight my favourite books in each post!

Some of these books aren’t released yet, so I’ll just have a quick thought with the full review to come!

1. Mad, Bad & Dangerous To Know by Samira Ahmed 🧠  ⭐️

Ahmed weaves two compelling tales together through striking protagonists. Their voices leap off the page and draw you into their respective stories. As a bit of a history nerd myself, the unravelling of the historical mystery was joyous to read. Full review here. Four stars.

2. Capturing the Devil by Kerri Maniscalco 🧠 💙 🏳️‍🌈

This was just the best ending possible to a series that I have adored exploring, with clever twists and turns. I really liked how Maniscalco tied together the entire series in just one story with a brilliantly fiendish villain, real stakes and a consummate sense of danger. Four stars.

3. Venom by Bex Hogan 🏳️‍🌈🧠

Hogan has such a skill for creating brilliant world-building and constantly keeping me on my toes. Every time the story seems to breathe and rest, there’s a sudden twist, but it never feels frantic, rather carefully manipulated and controlled by a master puppeteer. All this builds to one of the most vicious endings I have read. Full review here. Four and a half stars.

4. The Deck of Omens by Christine Lynn Herman 🏳️‍🌈🧠 💙 ⭐️

From the first sentence in this dark and unsettling book, you’re plunged straight back into the shadowy world of Four Paths and the wicked imagination of Herman. This exceeded my already astronomical expectations and delivered a fitting sequel & end to this atmospheric, character-driven duology. Full review here. Four and a half stars.

5. Out Now: Queer We Go Again! 🏳️‍🌈🧠 ⭐️

This was a really enjoyable anthology that the wonderful Sasha sent me and I was granted on Edelweiss. It was so joyful to see a range of experiences and casual diversity, which I felt was built on much more than the first one. Full review here. Four stars.

6. Children of Virtue and Vengeance by Tomi Adeyemi🧠 ⭐️

My reading experience of COVAV was just a case of feeling let down and disconnected from the characters. I had such high hopes for this story and unfortunately I didn’t feel like the book lived up to them. For me, the characters felt like they went backwards and the romance fell flat. Two stars.

7. Clique Bait by Ann Valett 🧠 🏳️‍🌈 ⭐️

I really enjoyed this revenge pursuing, clique infiltrating YA contemporary that very much matched the energy of Mean Girls and allowed me to completely escape our current situation in favour of intense privilege and unlikeable characters. Full review here. Four stars.
